The Summit of the Gods
The Summit of the Gods was written originally by Baku Yumemakura and illustrated by renowned manga artist. The series follows a young Japanese photojournalist, Fukamachi, who found a camera that could change the history of mountaineering. Fukamachi enters a world of obsessive mountaineers hungry for impossible conquests on a journey that led him, step by step, towards the summit of the gods.
The series has recently been made into an animated film offering proof that 2D provides just as many stomach-turning, vicarious thrills as 3-D animation. The film perfectly captures the delirious pull of pursuing a singular vision and ensures the audience feels every misstep and crumbling foothold. To add to that, the haunting score perfectly conveys the majesty and danger of mountaineering.
The discovery of the camera is what kickstart the events. This mystery is what drives the plot of the film ranging from shades of thriller action to scenes in Katmandu. However, ultimately this is a human story about obsession, struggle in the face of adversity, redemption and the discovery of what really makes us feel alive.
